Origins of electronic surrealism

Origins of electronic surrealism: in late December 2025, electronic music composer Xhenon initiated this movement. The idea was launched after discussing it with musician friends who shared his views on current instrumental electronic music:
- There are types of electronic music that are difficult to classify because they bear little or no resemblance to current genres.
- Much of this music actively uses or evokes surrealism, including among pioneering artists who used synthesizers.
- Artists would like to be able to better describe the electronic and instrumental musical universe that characterizes them.
Origins of electronic surrealism: influences and pioneering styles
Famous artists from various genres of electronic music have used and continue to use surrealist elements. These are sounds that do not exist in the real world. They are generally produced using electronic or electroacoustic instruments. However, surrealist visual elements have also been and continue to be used.
Electronic surrealism was created as a musical style. It is therefore completely free under Creative Commons License CC0 (equivalent to the public domain), free of charge, and open to the future. It is directly inspired by the surrealist art movement and instrumental electronic music.
The movement today
The musicians Dreamer DSP and Marty Tanx officially joined this movement in January 2026. Xhenon proposed that this website be created in order to raise awareness of electronic surrealism and to be able to freely share all useful resources.
* Surrealism is a poetic and artistic movement that emerged after the First World War. It encompasses many forms of expression: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, cinema, poetry, etc. André Breton defined the movement's manifesto in 1924. Wikipedia defines it as " using all psychic forces (automatism, dreams, the unconscious) freed from the control of reason and in conflict with accepted values ».
